2001 Calendar of Events


Every Tuesday: The Bon Bini Festival, a year-round folkloric event of entertainment, local arts, and food held at Fort Zoutman in Oranjestad starting at about 6:00 p.m.

Every Wednesday: Watapana Food & Art Festival from 6 - 8:30pm. Held between the Hyatt Regency Resort & Casino and the Americana Aruba Beach Resort & Casino.

January




January 1New Year's Day. An official holiday, celebrated with an island-wide display of fireworks that welcome in the New Year. Groups of musicians known as "Dande," stroll form house to house to sing good luck-greetings for the New Year.
January 25Betico Croes Day. An official holiday in memory of G.F. (Betico) Croes, the Aruban political leader who attained "Status Aparte" from Holland, introduced Aruba's own currency and established Aruba's National anthem and flag
Jan 13 thru Feb 28Carnival: One of the most exciting celebrations of the year. The entire island participates in spectacular festivities which include parades in streets with colorful costumes, steel and brass band music, dances and floats. Contests are held for best costumes, musicians, singers and election of the Carnival Queen. Aruba's oldest Social Club, Aruba Tivoli Club, organizes a spectacular Lighting Parade each year on the weekend preceding the Grand Parade .

March 1515th Aruba International Half Marathon (21K).
March 18National Anthem and Flag Day Official Holiday. Display of flags, national music and folkloric events are part of the traditional celebration. It takes place at the Plaza Betico Croes.

June 24Dera Gai (St. John's Day). Festive song, bright yellow and red costumes, and traditional dances surround the annual "Der Gai" festival, celebrated on the Feast of Saint John the Baptist.
June 25Aruba's 16th Annual International Triathlon. Open to the public. Consists of 1.5 km swim, 40 Km bike race, and 10 Km run.
June 29-30Aruba Jazz & Latin Music Festival.
JuneHi-Winds World Challenge. Windsurfers of all skill levels and ages can compete in six different categories.

July 7-88th Annual Aurba Perrier Reef Care Project. Annual marine environment awareness campaign, clean-up of underwater sites and beaches.

December 5Sint Nicolaas Day. Celebration of Sint Nicolaas' birthday. Traditionally, Sint Nicolaas arrives with his "Zwarte Pieten"(helper) at the Paardenbaai Harbor in Oranjestad just before his birthday to greet the children of Aruba and reward them with gifts for their good behavior during the year.
